Chapter 1

The Symphony in Your Gut

Or: How Your Body Turns a Salad Into a Brass Section

Let's start with a truth that nobody likes to admit: your body is loud.

Not on the outside. Sure, some of us have our moments, but the real noise is inside. As you read this, your gut is busy with a whole production. Imagine it as a factory breaking things down, a science lab mixing chemicals, a wine cellar fermenting, and sometimes, a whoopee cushion making memorable sounds. That's digestion β€” the most underappreciated miracle in your body, and it usually ends with a sound effect.

I know what you're probably thinking. Digestion seems simple: you eat, your stomach does something mysterious, and eventually you need a bathroom. But the truth is, it's much more fascinating β€” and funnier β€” than that. Your digestive system is a long, coiled conveyor belt of controlled chaos β€” most textbooks cite about 30 feet end-to-end, though that's measured in cadavers when the muscles are relaxed; in a living, contracted body, it's closer to 15 to 20 feet. Either way, it's run by trillions of tiny workers who take their jobs seriously. Sometimes, when their shift ends, they celebrate. Loudly.

So let me take you on a journey: a behind-the-scenes tour of digestion. Grab a fibrous snack if you have one, because we're about to follow it from your mouth all the way to its grand, gassy exit.

Stop One: The Mouth (Where It All Begins)

Digestion starts the moment food touches your tongue. You might think chewing is just about making food small enough so you don't choke, but it's actually the opening act of a long process. Your teeth act like bouncers, breaking food into pieces your stomach can handle. Meanwhile, your saliva (you make roughly half a liter to a liter and a half every day) contains an enzyme called amylase, which begins breaking down carbohydrates right in your mouth.

Here's something kind of amazing: if you chew a piece of bread long enough, it'll actually start to taste sweet. That's the amylase converting starches into sugars before you've even swallowed. Your body's already working on dessert while you're still chewing dinner. How efficient is that?

But here's where most of us go wrong: we don't chew enough. We live in a world of fast food and even faster eating. We inhale our meals as if we're late for something important, or in a competitive eating contest we never entered. The problem is, your stomach doesn't have teeth…

The tour continues through 13 chapters β€” the stomach (the "angry jacuzzi"), the microbiome, FODMAPs, medications, and the grand finale.

About the author

Meet Isaac Annan, RPh.

Registered Pharmacist 22+ Years Experience Health Educator

Isaac Annan is a Registered Pharmacist with over two decades of clinical experience across long-term care and retail pharmacy in the United States. He's spent his career studying what goes into the body β€” and, honestly, what comes out. Somewhere between the charts, the prescriptions, and the polite small talk, he noticed something important: people learn better when they laugh.

That insight became From Chew to Phew β€” a love letter to the gut, the place where biology meets comedy and chemistry meets culture. Isaac lives in Washington State with his wife Abigail and their five children, where he runs a licensed adult family home, mentors fellow pharmacists, and serves his church community. He writes about gut health because he believes science should be approachable, memorable, and occasionally hilarious.
